This liqueur is made from the cold infusion of cherries in Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC wine, a warm and very full-bodied wine. The colour is red and it has the characteristic smell of black cherries and berries. The preparation and use of this liqueur date back to the old farming tradition, handed down from generation to generation. Thanks to their active principles, cherries have diuretic, anti-uric, and anti-gout properties, they contains A, B, C vitamins, minerals such as iron, phosphorus, calcium, chlorine, sulphur, sodium, magnesium, potassium and trace elements like zinc, copper, manganese, fructose (sugar for diabetics).
The name Ratafià comes from an old tradition of the past. When the ambassadors were discussing of peace during a joyful banquet, they used to drink this liqueur, pronouncing the simple Latin words “Pax rata fiat!” In ancient times, this liquor was used, more specifically, to establish trade agreements or for the signing of deeds and legal documents at the end of negotiations.
